CBD 101: Part 1 "What is CBD & How Does It Work?"
Welcome to CBD 101: Part 1
You’ll learn what it is, how it works, benefits and side effects, different ways to consume it, and other cannabinoids besides CBD and how they all work together. We’ll be busting myths and misconceptions along the way.
WHAT IS CBD?
“CBD” is short for cannabidiol. Cannabidiol is the second most abundant cannabinoid naturally occurring in the resinous flowers of the cannabis plant. CBD is one of more than a hundred “phytocannabinoids,” which are unique to cannabis and endow the plant with its robust therapeutic profile.
It’s easy to be skeptical of CBD since it seemingly came out of nowhere and exploded in popularity in the past 10 or so years. However, CBD is not new, it’s just legal now! The 2018 US Farm Bill removed hemp, defined as cannabis (Cannabis sativa L.) and derivatives of cannabis with extremely low concentrations of the psychoactive compound delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) (no more than 0.3 percent THC on a dry weight basis), from the definition of marijuana in the Controlled Substances Act (CSA). CBD has been researched, tested and confirmed by scientists and doctors to be a safe, non-addictive substance.
Cannabis has been used for thousands of years for its therapeutic properties. Today, it’s more readily available than ever in the form of CBD Oils, edibles, vapes, and more. CBD is a safe, natural alternative to pharmaceuticals. By tapping into how we function biologically on a deep level, CBD can provide relief for chronic pain, anxiety, inflammation, depression and many other conditions.
DIFFERENT TYPES OF CBD
CBD products are available in 3 different forms:
- Full Spectrum CBD
- Broad Spectrum CBD
- Isolate CBD
Soooo what do these terms mean?
Full Spectrum:
The name references the use of a full spectrum of compounds found in the hemp (cannabis) plant, as opposed to solely CBD (like CBD isolate).
A full spectrum oil contains CBD, less than .3% THC, and an array of other Cannabinoids such as CBG and CBDA, micronutrients, flavonoids, terpenes and other plant-y goodness.
Full Spectrum CBD Oil is our most popular product due to it's wide range of benefits! Flip through the slides to learn the pros & cons of full spectrum usage.
Broad Spectrum:
In terms of efficacy, these products fall somewhere in the middle of Full Spectrum CBD products, and CBD Isolates.
To achieve this classification, first you start with a full spectrum oil and then THC (and usually other compounds as well) are removed.
Isolate:
When referring to CBD, an Isolate is the purest form of CBD product.
A Cannabidiol Isolate is produced by removing every other compound found in the hemp plant besides the CBD molecule.
HOW DOES CBD WORK?
CBD functions in the body by mimicking and enhancing the effects of the compounds naturally produced by our bodies called “endocannabinoids”. These endocannabinoids are part of what scientists refer to as the “endocannabinoid system.”
The endocannabinoid system plays a vital role in regulating a broad range of physiological processes that affect our everyday experience – our mood, our energy level, our intestinal system, immune activity, blood pressure, bone density, glucose metabolism, how we experience pain, stress, hunger, and more. This is why CBD has such a long list of benefits- the endocannabinoid system has its hand in nearly every process in the body!
However, like many systems in our body, the endocannabinoid system can become stressed and stop functioning properly. Chronic endocannabinoid deficiency causes those physiological processes mentioned above to become dysregulated. Supplementing with CBD Oil helps to support the endocannabinoid system (ECS) and over time, corrects the deficiency so your ECS- and entire body- can function optimally!
